The Bujinkan (武神館)
is an international martial arts organization based in Japan and headed by Masaaki Hatsumi. The combat system taught by this organization comprises nine separate ryūha, or schools, which are collectively referred to as Bujinkan Budō Taijutsu. The Bujinkan is most commonly associated with ninjutsu. However, Masaaki Hatsumi uses the term Budo (meaning martial way) as he says the ryūha are descended from historical samurai schools that teach samurai martial tactics and ninjutsu schools that teach ninja tactics.

In our training, we learn practical self-defense skills: falling and rolling safely, striking with hands and feet, blocking, evading, and executing throws, assuming a larger, heavier opponent. We practice joint locks, targeting weak points (kyusho), strategy, and manipulating an opponent’s attention. We develop instincts to stay prepared and trust our innate defensive mechanisms.
We study traditional Japanese kata from historical schools to understand techniques deeply and train with traditional weapons (wooden or soft in regular dojo sessions), including sticks, knives, swords, ropes, spears, and throwing weapons, preparing for scenarios where opponents or we are armed. Our teachings assume opponents are faster, stronger, larger, armed, and often not alone.
Budo Taijutsu suits all ages and genders, regardless of fitness level, though better physical condition enhances effectiveness.
