Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu
Bujinkan Dojo is an international martial arts organization headquartered in Japan. The
founder and head of Bujinkan Dojo is Grandmaster Masaaki Hatsumi, who is also the Soke
(patriarch or head of the family) of all the martial arts schools officially taught within
the Bujinkan system.
The nine Japanese martial arts schools officially taught within the Bujinkan Dojo are collectively known as Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu:
Togakure-ryū Ninjutsu, 34.
Gyokko-ryū Kosshijutsu, 28.
Kukishinden-ryū Happō Bikenjutsu, 28.
Shindenfudō-ryū Dakentaijutsu, 26.
Gyokushin-ryū Ninjutsu, 21.
Kotō-ryū Koppōjutsu, 18.
Takagiyōshin-ryū Jūtaijutsu, 17.
Gikan-ryū Koppōjutsu, 15.
Kumogakure-ryū Ninjutsu, 14.
All the schools are distinct, having developed and been passed down through entirely
different lineages and individuals. Yet, they share many common principles. Falling
techniques, movement, throws, controls, hand-to-hand combat, historical and modern weapons,
manipulation of the opponent’s perception and much more. All techniques, kata, and
principles have been transmitted from master to master for over 900 years and have proven
themselves in countless battles and crisis situations.
As Ed Martin (Bujinkan Shihan/Senior Instructor, 15th Dan) once said, "only the techniques
and principles that kept you alive could return from the battlefield".
The goal of Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu training is to develop survival skills, not merely the
ability to win, as these are two entirely different things.
Earlier, I emphasized that Bujinkan officially teaches nine Japanese martial arts schools,
for which Masaaki Hatsumi serves as the Soke. In reality, however, the picture is broader.
Hatsumi Sensei has studied a great variety of other martial, military, and athletic
disciplines. In addition, he possesses an extensive collection of ancient and historical
Japanese martial arts manuscripts, a treasure trove that provides access to immensely
valuable knowledge.
In truth, Hatsumi passes on not only the teachings of these nine schools but also the vast
body of wisdom he has acquired throughout his life from numerous masters and diverse
sources.
Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu is not a sport! We do not hold competitions!
The teachings of Budo Taijutsu are designed to function on the battlefield and in real-life
situations where life and death are at stake.
